Patchwork blanket with cutwork embroidery elements and lace

I have used some Richelieu embroideries from this book in a white/blue patchwork quilt and combined them with various laces.

Material of Richelieu embroidery

Material:

Richelieu embroidery is pre-drawn, not counted, so the fabric can and should be dense and finely woven. It doesn't really matter what type of fabric you embroider on.

Embroidery is traditionally done with a pointed embroidery needle and embroidery cotton or with pearl thread if the fabric is coarser.

The design is either traced through if the base fabric is somewhat transparent or traced onto tracing paper with an iron-on pencil and then ironed off. However, the pattern is mirror-inverted at the end due to the ironing.

Preliminary drawing of a Richelieu embroidery

This is what a Richelieu preliminary sketch looks like.

The double lines are stitched with buttonhole stitches, the spaces in between are cut out. The thin lines are bars that are drawn in with thread and stitched over. The circles and lines can be embroidered with satin stitches, the lines on the leaves with stem stitches.

Historical Richelieu embroidery with filling stitches

A special old Richelieu embroidery from my collection.
Here Richelieu embroidery is combined with filling stitches.

This embroidery and the explanation of the filling stitches is also part of my book.
