Brick stitch is a medieval, Gothic embroidery technique.
Staggered satin stitches are embroidered.
In the Middle Ages, relic bags or alms bags were often decorated with this embroidery. There are also a small number of embroidered picture stories, embroidered stories from the Bible or from the lives of saints, such as the detail on the right, a brick stitch embroidery from the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The medieval works that still exist today mostly originate from Hildesheim and were taken to various museums during the Second World War.
