The blackwork stitches are counted backstitches (long at the bottom before short back at the top) or Holbein stitches (stitch up and down and close the gaps on the way back). Only outlines are embroidered and occasionally a box is filled with a cross stitch.
Embroidery is done on counted fabric, the thread can be chosen freely. It can be embroidery twist, four-ply embroidery thread or even pearl thread, depending on how coarse or fine the base fabric is.
